Newsletter Issue 5 - Term 2 Week 4
Principal Report

Dear Families
Wow! Have we been busy this term, and we are only coming to the end of week four. Staff and children have been busily working and enjoying a range of wonderful opportunities provided by our dedicated staff.
Uniforms
As the weather has started to place a chill on the air – I would like to remind families and students, that it is important we maintain high expectations in regards to our school uniform. Children are permitted to wear the school jumper only to keep warm, and it is very helpful if you ensure these are labelled as when the children take them off as the day gets warmer, they often leave them laying around. When they are labelled it is easier for us to return them to the correct owner. I am also pointing out that students should be encouraged to wear white or black socks, saving funky colours for our Crazy Sock Fundraiser on May 30.
Staff Development
As part of our whole school improvement program, we have dedicated significant resources to upskilling staff and building a positive culture. Last Friday, we were lucky to have Jenny Cole, from ‘Positively Beaming’ to facilitate a session for our staff around DISC Profiling and the impact of Staff and Teacher efficacy on student outcomes. We know that a collective and consistent teaching approach can improve student outcomes by up to four times. Our leadership team are committed to ensuring that after such a period of transience with Principals, that it is essential we develop a strong consistent team approach at North. Six staff have left for training today to work with high performing schools in Perth, to help us on our journey to continue to provide the best opportunities for our students. We look forward to sharing this with our team and school community in the coming weeks.
Positive Behaviour in Schools
Positive behaviour in schools focuses on creating a supportive and positive learning environment that prioritizes student well-being and promotes positive interactions. This approach shifts from solely focusing on discipline to reinforcing desired behaviours and building a sense of community. Led by Mrs Danielle Crilly, our staff have been developing a consistent approach behind the scenes for many months. Next week we will start to roll out consistent lessons across the school enhancing high behavioural expectations that will be consistent across every classroom. We will be using our school acknowledgement tokens to reinforce behaviour and students will work towards earning reinforcers as a team.
New Attendance and Notification System
As of 4 June our school is implementing a new attendance computer program – Compass, which is also used at Tom Price Primary and the High School. Children marked absent, will prompt a text message to family to confirm attendance. Please bear with us, as the system is new, we may experience some teething problems, hopefully this will be short lived. Please call the office if you receive unexpected texts regarding attendance.
Staff Changes
Unfortunately, we said goodbye to Mrs Nixon last week, as she has joined the high school team, following her passion. We wish her all the very best in her new Coordinator role. We have absorbed this loss at the moment, meaning teachers are working very hard, due to no relief teachers available. I will be advertising for some additional specialist support very soon.
On a final note – Thank you to our wonderful P&C. Your tireless efforts, running our canteen, uniform shop, events for children and raising funds for wonderful resources do not go unnoticed. We appreciate you this P&C Thank you Day and Every Day!
If you have any queries about what we do at the school, please let me know either in person, or by email on nicole.hill@education.wa.edu.au
Kind regards,
Nicki Hill
Principal

Walk Safely to School Day - Thurs 15 May

On Thursday 15 May the students were encouraged to Walk Safley to School.
We would like to say a massive Thank You to the Shire of Ashburton for putting on an amazing breakfast for all our students and parents to enjoy after their walk to school.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the students of Kindy and Pre-primary got to celebrate the Ladies We Love by holding an afternoon of pampering and creativity with nail painting, biscuit making, portrait painting, massages and colouring in. All the ladies were very relaxed and felt very loved.
National Simultaneous Storytime

Wednesday 21 May 2025 was National Simultaneous Storytime where all schools nationally read the story The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell. Our Principal Nicki Hill had the pleasure of reading the story to our year 1 and 2 classes. Everyone absolutely loved the story and taking part in this special moment.

Room 2 Assembly

On Wednesday 8 May 2025, Room 2 held their school assembly. The students performed the narrative poem 'The Jabberwocky' by Lewis Carroll. The poem is set in Wonderland and is full of nonsense and portmanteau words, which the students studied as part of the unit of work. The poem tells of a brave young man that ignores the warnings of his father to hunt the fierce beast known as the Jabberwocky.
Room 2 would like to congratulate all of the certificate winners for this week and wish everyone a happy Term 2.
